Curriculum Summary

 5th Grade Core Curriculum

 5th Grade Religion: The Voyages curriculum in fifth grade is Christ-centered so that students will have optimal opportunity to grow in their relationship of faith and life with God. It focuses on providing basic knowledge of the Old Testament. We use our Bibles and our text as we travel through the time when Moses was leading Israel. Students are exposed to the Judges, Kings and prophets of the Old Testament.Students also learn about Martin Luther and the Reformation. Memory work is also a key part of the religion curriculum.

5th Grade Math: Saxon Mathematics: Math 6/5,2004: Students cover the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.The curriculum also covers sequencing of numbers, prime and composite numbers, exponents and powers, measurement, and an introduction to geometry.

5th Grade Literature: Students read several story types including short stories, historical fiction, folk tales, biographies, poetry, fantasies, and tall tales. They also read drama and nonfiction stories. Students use a literary anthology as well as novel-based learning. Throughout the course, development of comprehension, reading strategies, and vocabulary are the central themes.


5th Grade Science:  Science is both a field of knowledge and a method of discovering new knowledge.  The students will develop the science skills necessary to observe, infer, classify, measure, form a hypothesis, experiment, predict, and interpret data.  The subject areas covered this year are: plants, gardening, sound, properties of matter, ecology, and weather.  The textbook we use is: Science  McGraw Hill, 2000

5th Grade Social Studies:  Students begin the year with an overview of the geography of the U.S. including a review of basic geography terminology and map skills.  Other units include the study of early exploration and settlement of North America, the colonial period, the Revolutionary War, the constitution, the impact of the Civil War, the settlement of the frontier, the two World Wars and the Civil Rights Movement.  History, geography skills, and study skills are taught through a variety of methods including group projects, historical fiction, simulations of historical events and a brief research project.  Students also participate in Exchange City, a hands-on economics unit which culminates in the opportunity to run their own business.

Teacher Bio
 My name is Debbie Albertini. I have been teaching at Christ the King since 2002. This is my 21st year in the field of education. I am a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. I am married to my husband, John. We have four children- Josh (21), Amanda (20), Nicole (17), and Sarah (4). I received my B.S. in Education from McKendree College in Lebanon, IL. I look forward to being able to share God's word with your family.
