Curriculum Summary

                                                    7th Grade Core Curriculum

7th Religion( Mrs. Martin):  This is an Old Testament class. Children are not expected to have any prior Bible experience in order to excel in this class. It consists of historical information, Bible study, memorizing information and devotions. Children are taught out of the Bible and a textbook.

7th Tennessee History/Geography (Mrs. Martin):  This class consists of two separate textbooks. The first semester we will concentrate on Geography. In this class we will learn about the world around us, the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Latin America and South America. In Tennessee History we learn about Tennessee's early settlers, how our state grew through the years and many famous people from Tennessee. As a culminating activity our class takes a trip to Nashville where we visit the Capital, Parthenon, Country Music Hall of Fame, Studio B, Bicentennial Mall State Park, The Hermitage, Belle Meade Plantation, Carnton Plantation and the Wildhorse Saloon.

7th Math (Mrs. Martin):  This class is divided into two levels. The first level is a grade-level math that is geared toward learners who are on target for 7th grade math. I use the Saxon Math 8/7 book for this class. The second level is an advanced-level math that is geared toward learners who are on target for Algebra I in 8th grade. For this class I use the Saxon Algebra 1/2 (Pre-Algebra) book. The Saxon books are set up in such a way that we learn 5 (4 for Pre-Algebra) lessons then take a test. Each day the lessons vary considerably from the lesson before. The homework constantly reviews previous lessons.

7th Reading/Literature (Mrs. Shepard):  Reading is a lifelong process which builds on language development.  In 7th grade students will continue to develop and apply a wide range of reading strategies to enhance the reading process.  Students will respond to texts individually and share in literary communities becoming critical readers and experiencing increased comprehension and personal satisfaction.  As the class explores a variety of genres, students will use both oral and written response to analyze and evaluate literature.  Units of study will include the short story, poetry, historical fiction, drama, and fiction and non fiction.  In addition to their text, Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, students will read To Kill a Mockingbird, Call of the Wild, The Red Pony, The Adventures of Ulysses, The Merchant of Venice and The Hobbit. Students will study and develop proper terminology for literary analysis.

7th Grammar: Students apply their knowledge of the writing process to a variety of writing assignments. They are expected to compose a poetry portfolio. Emphasis is placed on grammar (parts of speech, compound and complex sentences, subject/verb agreement etc..) through the use of question and answer flow in order to classify parts of speech in sentences. Vocabulary is integrated into daily lessons and applied to enhancing writing skills.

7th Science (Mr. Novy):  Science is both a field of knowledge and a method of discovering new knowledge.  The students will develop the science skills necessary to observe, infer, classify, measure, form a hypothesis, experiment, predict, and interpret data.  The subject areas covered this year are: scientific method, electricity, light waves, oceanography, cell reproduction, and the human body.  The textbook we use is: Science  by McGraw Hill, 2000.

Teacher Bio

My name is Natalie Conrad Martin and I am the homeroom teacher for 7th grade. I also teach the following classes: Math for grades 6 and 7, Religion for 7th graders and Tennessee History/Geography for 7th graders.

I was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas where I attended St. John’s Lutheran Church and School through the 7th grade. We moved to Searcy, Arkansas where I attended public school through high school. I went to college in Jonesboro at Arkansas State University where I majored in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Spanish. Upon graduation in 2000 I began working at Christ the King Lutheran School. While here I have taken the Lutheran Colloquy through Concordia University Education Network and became a “Called” Lutheran teacher. I have also completed my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Design through Concordia University in Irvine, CA. Christ the King is the one and only school I have been blessed to teach. I cannot imagine teaching anywhere else!

I believe that every student has the ability to learn. It is my job, as the teacher, to find the best and easiest way to teach each individual student so that he/she enjoys the experience.
