Curriculum Summary

In sixth and eighth grade Discoveries literature classes, the students enjoy using the Fast ForWord Program.  The Fast ForWord Program is a neuroscience computer instruction program.  The students work on exercises to strengthen their skills in phonetics, word attack, comprehension, memory, and reading fluency.  The reading curriculum is based on Christ the King Lutheran School's excellent sequential skills curriculm.  The students read novels and do book reports on them.  Vocabulary development  is a part of every poem, novel, short story, and form of literature that the students read.  The literature books are Prentice Hall Literature.  Christ the King Lutheran School has very special readers!

In math, the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades work in the Saxon Math program.  We use manipulatives, drawing pictures, and audio-visuals in the classes.  Repetition in this math program helps the students retain their math skills.  Our mathematicans count!

The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade grammar classes use the Shurley English Method.  This program is an excellent way for the students to learn sequential skills while continuing to practice previous skills learned.  Writing is a major component in the grammar classes for all  grades.  The students have been writing in journals and writing paragraphs since the beginning of school.  We have great writers!

Karen Teal       Elementary Discoveries Teacher

My name is Mrs. Karen Teal, and I teach Discoveries students at Christ the King Lutheran School.  The daughter of a Lutheran missionary, I was born in Nigeria, West Africa and lived there until I finished the fifth grade.  Growing up on the mission field offered such unique experiences as owning a pet monkey and traveling in Europe when my family was on furlough.  School was an enjoyable experience, and it was during my last year in Africa that I decided to be a teacher someday.  My family then moved to the United States where my father served as a pastor in Ft. Worth, TX.  I attended Concordia University, Austin, TX for two years and received a BA degree in Elementary Education from Concordia University, Chicago, IL with concentrations in Art and English.

My career began when I served for five years as the first grade teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in Ft. Worth, TX.  Since moving to the Memphis area, I have taught first, second, and third grade homeroom classes at Christ the King.  Currently, I work in the Discoveries program, teaching reading, literature, and/or math to students with mild learning disabilities.  I am married and have one grown daughter.  Reading, cooking, snow skiing, and traveling with my family are some things I enjoy.

God has blessed me with the gift of patience.  I rely on this character trait whether I am encouraging students to learn new concepts or assisting them in working to the best of their capabilities.  My goal in teaching reading is to help increase my students' comprehension while they are learning to read more fluently.  In math, I want my students to build a solid foundation by learning the basic operations and applying those skills to problem solving.

Ephesians 2:8 is my favorite Bible verse:  "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--"  (NIV)  I consider it a blessing to be able to share my faith with the children I teach at Christ the King.
