Projects
      Various projects will be assigned throughout the school year, relating to the topics covered. These assignments may require students to access the internet for information, but the research will be minimal as these projects are designed to be a way for students to share personal musical interests and tastes, and above all, have fun! (More detailed handouts will be given to the students on the day they are assigned, this is merely a outline of what will be covered).

Project One: Create an Instrument
      Students will be asked to choose from the four instrument types (brass, woodwind, string, or percussion) and create an instrument. This can be as simple as a new twist on an existing instrument, or a completely new creation altogether!

Project Two: Artist Biography
      Students will choose an artist and write a short biography including the origin of the band, the era in which they played, possible influences, etc.

Project Three: Create A Band!!!
      Students will be asked to create a band of any genre; complete with back story, band members and personalities, stage attire, etc. Then the students will become “Band Manager”, and come up with ways to promote the band. This will be done in the form of a promotional “Poster” students create that will be the bands way of getting the word out! (Most of this project will be done “in class”).

Project Four: Music Yearbook!
      Throughout the year, we as a class will take note of and/or discuss the music that we hear and enjoy throughout the year. Towards the end of the school year, we will compile our information into an “end of year music review” in a musical magazine format. As a class we will become the staff of “Christ the King’s Music Review ‘09”, providing news, editorials, reviews, and more from the year past. Each student will provide a section of our magazine, which when put together will be given to all students as the “final copy”!

Grading
      Grading will be based on participation, test scores, and project grades with the following weight;
Tests: 50%
Projects: 30%
Participation: 20%

Artist of the Month
      Throughout the course of the year, I will provide information on artists that have positive messages and use God’s word as influence for their music. There are many artists with good messages that do not get exposure in the media that reaches middle school aged children in this day and age. And music as a tool for building our relationship with God can be hard to come by, much less music that I would have listened to in my middle school days. But there are many great bands and artists that do not conform to the sometimes disturbing trends that have arisen in the past few years, which do not get media exposure due to the fact that they do not sing about the typical topics of most popular bands. Each month, I will provide information on one of these artists, providing background information, music style and possible influences, and ways to hear some of their material. Hopefully this will provide interested students a choice to hear some great bands with encouraging words that they otherwise may never be exposed to!

Teacher Bio
I am a member of CTK Lutheran church, and have worked in various capacities for the school over the years. I have worked in the preschool afterschool care program, the k-8 afterschool care program, summer camp, and last fall worked as a substitute teacher. I have a degree in business administration from the University of Memphis, and am currently working on earning a masters in curriculum and instruction from Cumberland University. This will be my first year as the music teacher for the school, and I am looking forward to working with all the wonderful staff and students. Music has always been a passion and a hobby of mine, which is why I am so eager to work with a curriculum that I believe will be as fun and informational as possible. I am truly blessed to be here and know that this will be another wonderful chapter in my membership of the CTK family!
