Curriculum Summary
In our musical explorations, we want the children to realize that music is a gift of God and a talent that everyone may enjoy.  We expose each child to the many elements of music through participation in musical activities, both actively (singing, moving, playing instruments) and inactively (listening).  In grades two through four we have a textbook with musical selections.  This is used on a regular basis to supplement the curriculum.

In Kindergarten we begin to expose each child to the various elements of music.  We help each child to find his/her singing voice and to experience rhythm through movement and the playing of rhythm instruments.  We enjoy the use of singing games and dramatization.

In the First Grade, we recognize the elements of rhythm, as well as encourage an increased awareness of melody and harmony.  We explore vocal and mouth sounds and enjoy singing solo as well as in a group.  We identify families of instruments and participate in playing classroom percussion instruments.  We also begin to introduce music vocabulary and musical symbols.

In the Second Grade, we expand on the exposure to musical elements, continuing our exploration of rhythm, melody, harmony, and movement.  We continue to use rhythm instruments and vocal selections.  We also expand on the music vocabulary and symbols.

In the Third Grade, we continue to build on what was learned in previous grades.  We talk about the instrumental sounds of individual instruments.  We experience music of diverse cultures and become aware of the style differences determined by tempo and rhythm.  We expand on the music vocabulary and symbols and begin to learn the letter names of notes.

In the Fourth Grade, we reinforce what was previously learned and become more detailed in knowledge of musical vocabulary and symbols.  There is an increased knowledge of note values and note names.  The opportunity to play rhythm instruments remains, as well as creativity in movement.

As you can see, our music program builds upon itself.  Our final goal is not just head knowledge of symbols and notes, but that the child experiences a thorough enjoyment of the gift of music.  Our music classes are planned so that each child may use and enjoy his/her musical talent to God's glory.  The evaluation of each child in our music classes is not based on talent or ability.  The evaluation is based upon participation, cooperation, and behavior.

During the school year, the children will occasionally be asked to provide music in a CTK worship service.  When this happens, a note will be sent home.  We hope that you will allow your child to participate in these events.

Teacher Bio

Mrs. Donna Gable (K-4th grade)  Greetings from one-half of your music department.  My name is Donna Gable, and I am the teacher of music for Kindergarten through Fourth Grade.  So that you may get to know me better, I'll mention a little about myself.  I am originally from Detroit, Michigan.  I received my B.S.Ed. degree from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois (now known as Concordia University, Chicago).  I taught four years in Frankenmuth, Michigan, then moved to Memphis, where I taught various grades at Holy Cross Lutheran School.  I married a native Memphian, Paul.   We have three daughters and one grandson.  In 1995, I accepted a call to teach at Christ the King, where I remained until I 'retired' in 2001.  Since 2001, I have enjoyed teaching music to the children at CTK.
