Our students are encouraged to participate in Accelerated Reader, a computer-managed reading enrichment program in which students read books of their choice and take the corresponding comprehension tests on their classroom computer or in the computer lab. The objective of the program is to gradually increase the reading levels and thereby the students’ vocabulary and comprehension rate. After the student completes a test, the computer awards points to the student based on the length and difficulty of the book and the test scores. Prizes are awarded at various milestones of achievement. You can track the students’ progress on the bulletin board in the hallway of Building 3. Recently CTK has joined AR Enterprise, which has over 113,000 tests to offer! Our students will now have an even greater opportunity to read a variety of wonderful books, increase their
comprehension rate, and gain confidence in their reading abilities. We thank our PTL for making this expanded web-based reading enhancement program available to CTK. AR BookFinder

Helpful information from the A/R website:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is Interest Level (IL)?
Interest Level is based on content – a book’s themes and ideas – and indicates for which age group a book is appropriate. A/R groups content appropriateness into three categories: LG = Lower Grades (K-3); MG = Middle Grades (4-8); and UG = Upper Grades (9-12).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is ATOS Book Level (BL)?
Book Levels are reported using the ATOS readability formula and represent the difficulty of the text. For example, a book level of 4.5 means the text could likely be read independently by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader during the fifth month of school. (Of course the content may or may not be appropriate for a fourth grader which is why we also use Interest Levels.).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is 2000-Point Scale?
The 2000-point scale is a conversion of the ATOS scale to something similar, but not identical, to the Lexile Scale. It’s another scale for showing the difficulty of a book.

Would you like to donate a book?  Contact Mrs. Genie Swan for a list of books on our Library Wish List -- either because they are not in our collection, or because they are so well-loved that they are falling apart and need to be replaced.  If you would like to donate a book, we invite you to purchase a hard-bound copy at your favorite book store.  We will attach a book plate thanking the donor, and add it to our collection.  For many years to come, CTK students will enjoy your thoughtfulness!  If you have any questions, please contact our Librarian, Mrs. Genie Swan 901-682-8405.
